Hi! Thanks for your help! I'm flying from NYC-Shanghai-Tokyo

My stay in Shanghai will be approximately 4 days. Do I have to contact anyone before I arrive at the airport in New York? Or do I just tell the airline once I'm at the airport. I was also contemplating doing NYC-Shanghai-Hong Kong. Would that be considered a 3rd country? Thanks again!

1) There's nothing you need to do beforehand. The airline will.do the necessary document check when checking in. You'll need to show them your onward ticket.
2) Both are compliant for the 144-hour transit.
