About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Chicago Osaka Shanghai Tokyo

Hi We are taking a vacation in japan for two weeks but on our way from Chicago with 2 hrs transit in Osaka , we arrive in shanghai at 0035 Tuesday and leave shanghai Wednesday 1330 for Tokyo. Are we qualified for 3 day visa exemption for china? Should I call our airline and pass info to Chinese immigration? Thanks

Pradip, based on your travel route, you won’t be able to use the free transit in Shanghai because Osaka Shanghai Tokyo is not a transit at all.

The rules are very clear and there are no exceptions. You are transiting in Japan, not China.
