About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Is Hong Kong classed as a third country?

I would like to fly from Thailand to Guangzhou, stay for a day to meet a friend and then from Guangzhou to Hong Kong before a return trip to Thailand.

With Thailand as my point of departure and Hong Kong my next destination after China would this qualify for the 72hr transit visa at CAN?.....thanks for any advice you can offer

Martin, HK can be regarded as a third region. You cannot enjoy 72 hour free transit in Guangzhou, but if your total layover time in Guangzhou is less than 24 hours, you can use 24 hour direct transit. No visa is required.

Thanks for your prompt reply however I assume the direct transit option would not allow me to leave airside to meet a friend in Guangzhou for the day.?

Further if as you advise HKG is classed as a third country in my travel chain of tickets why would I not qualify for the 72hr free transit?

Thanks in advance for any further clarification you can provide.

You have to fly BKK-CAN-HKG the whole way to be eligible, assuming your nationality is on the list. If not, then you can only use 24-hour direct transit.
