72 hour free transit and Hong Kong

Is HK considered a separate country (region) for 72 hour free transit?
I hope to travel from Tokyo to HK with a 72hr Beijing layover, but unsure if I need a visa or not. Many thanks in advance.

Tony, HK will be considered as a third country (region) for 72 hour free transit policy.
You are eligible for the 72 hour free transit in Beijing. Besides, Japan passport holders can enjoy 15 days free entry to China, so you don't need a visa for that. Have a nice trip!
