About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Toronto - Shanghai - Manila

I'll be stopping in Shanghai for about 48 hours (I'm Canadian) on my way to Manila. I've been told I do not require a Visa to enter Manila, but according to the guidelines above, I need a visa to the third country (Philippines) to qualify for the 72 hour free transit. Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks!
