About:China Visa Application Requirements

Round trip - unclear

I was planning on flying into Beijing from Kuala Lumpur but leaving from shainghai for Korea - does that count as a round trip ticket

No, it isn’t round trip air ticket, but it is ok for the visa application.
Or if you travel like Kuala Lumpur-Beijing & Shanghai (24 hours)-Korea, you will be able to use the 24 hour direct transit in China, No need to apply for a visa then.
