Not sure what I need for layover in PVG

I will be flying from JFK to Japan. I have an 8 hour layover in PVG. What documentation do I need to secure the 24 hour without a visa? Is a passport enough? And what will I be required to do at PVG?

Morgan, you are eligible for the 24 hour direct transit in Shanghai. You need to provide passport and the air tickets.
