About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Traveling from the US

Hello, As an American, can I travel from the USA to Beijing for 2 days and then directly back to the USA without a visa?

No. You must be in transit to a 3rd country. Nothing prevents you from heading home right away from that 3rd country though.
