About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I will be in Seoul for work and would like to visit Beijing one weekend.

Here is the trip I want to do:
Seoul - Beijing on Friday evening
Beijing - Seoul on Sunday evening
Can I "apply" for a 72-hour free transit? Or do I need tourist visa ?

You're allowed to apply for a transit visa only if the arrival and departure countries are differents.
Then no.
But you can try To leave Beijin to Hong-Kong for 2 days before to come back to Seoul for example, and it will be Ok.
