Does 72hour free transit apply to a flight that has a stopover in Chengdu before Beijing?

Hello,
Flying from Tokyo to Beijing but the flight is not direct with stopover in Chengdu for 6 hours before moving on and arriving in Beijing. Is 72 hour visa-free travel still applicable? I will travel to Taiwan or Hong Kong afterwards.
