Hi, the 24 hour direct transit in Beijing can cover your travel, no visa will be needed then. But you need to apply for a free temporary stay permit at the immigration office when you arrive at the airport and then you can visit Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City.

Thanks Vicent, very helpful. Would this free 24 hr permit at the airport be applicable for indian passport holders?
I called Chinese Embassy in Singapore today and they said I should apply a single entry visa here in Singapore cost $90 sgd and 3-4 days time.

Yes, the 24 hour direct transit facility is also applicable to Indian passport holders. In principle, you do qualify for the 24 hour direct transit. Maybe you can call Beijing airport immigration office to confirm that. Tel: 0086-10-56095400
