About:China Tourist Visa

In Shanghai In Oct 2017 for 3days before getting on cruise ship-

What sort of visa, where and how do I apply for a husband & wife wanting to spend 3 nights in Shanghai before getting on a cruise ship in Shanghai on 17 Oct 2017? We have Australian passports. Do we have to go to a Chinese Embassy, if so, is there one in Melbourne?
Any information will be appreciated.
Thank you.

Ellen, if you travel like Australian-Shanghai(144 hours)-a third country or region, no visa will be needed for that.
