About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hello, I am an American with an American passport

but I live and work in Thailand currently and have a Thai work visa. I've been invited to Shanghai to visit a friend as soon as next week if possible. I just want to be sure the 72 hour free transit would apply to me? It's not a layover as I would be entering from Thailand and going back to Thailand. Lastly, would I be eligible for the 144 hour free transit? Thank you in advance!

If so, you won’t qualify for the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai.
If you want to use the free transit, you are advised to travel like Thailand-HK-Shanghai (144 hours)-Thailand, or Thailand- Shanghai (144 hours)- HK-Thailand.

If you want to fly Thailand-China-Thailand you need a visa in advance.
If you fly (for example) Thailand-China-HKG-Thailand you don't need a visa in advance for 144 hours stay in China.
