About:Chinese Temporary Residence Permit

Hi my wife is mainland Chinese and we have a son and are wanting to stay in china,

have been married for 3 years now. I am wanting to stay in china. I was working but changing to be a stay at home dad for a while and complete my online university (not china) and take care of my son while she works. What visa should I apply for? How long can I get this for as well?

You should apply for a spouse Q1 type for that. After you submit the application, 4 working days are needed to get the result.
After you enter China on the Q1 type, you can apply for a temporary residence permit which may allow you to stay for one eyar within China. After one year, you can renew it to continue your stay.

If so, you can try to convert your current visa to the Q1 type at the exit and entry administration of the local PSB within China. If it can be done, there is no need to leave China.
