About:China Visa Exemption

can I use the 24 hour direct transit (or the 72hr exemption) on both legs of my trip?

I'm a USA national visiting Japan, layover in Shanghai (less than 24 hours) on way to Tokyo from Chicago, another layover about a week later in Beijing (between Osaka and Chicago) may be just under 24 hours or up to 48
