About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Traveling from Honolulu-Shanghai-Kunming-Bangkok

I am an American citizen and have a 6 hour layover in Shanghai and a 13 hours layover in Kunming, will I be able to get out and back in of the both airports using the 72 hours Visa in both cities?

Because you have two stops, you're allowed a maximum of 24 hours direct transit from scheduled arrival time in Shanghai to scheduled departure time from Kunming.

Ok so for example my flight arrives in Shanghai at roughly 2pm on 6/3 and leaves Shanghai at 8pm on 6/3, then I arrive in Kunming at 11:55 pm on 6/3 and leave at 1 pm on 6/4, therefor I only have 23 hours in China and I will be allowed to leave both airports and briefly explore. Is this correct?
