please what type of visa do I apply for? And what do I need to take to the embassy? What do my accompanying person needs too?

Both your accompanying person and you can apply for an F type for the conference. The required documents include a completed application form, passport and copy of its data page, and a passport-style photo taken recently, as well as the invitation letter.
