About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am US citizen who will be in HKG. Can i go HKG to PVG and back to HKG for flight back to US?

Traveling from US to Seoul Korea then to Hong Kong. Would like to travel Hong Kong to Shanghai for 72hrs then return to Hong Kong for flight back to US.

HKG-PVG-HKG isn't a transit, so obviously you can't use free transit. You need a visa in advance for that.
