About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

3rd country question. Is the following acceptable for 72 hour transit:

US-Japan-Shanghai-Japan-US?

No, but US-Shanghai-Japan-US or US-Japan-Shanghai-US is acceptable.

Is this still the case if return to US after Japan is within 72 hours? US-Japan-Shanghai-Japan-US where Shanghai-Japan-US travel happens within 72 hours. Could the 144 hour VFT apply?

That's not eligible for free transit, because Japan-Shanghai-Japan isn't a transit.
