San Francisco to Chengdu to Kathmandu

I am an American traveling from San Francisco to Chengdu and then on to Kathmandu. I will be on the ground in Chengdu a total of 14 hours. I am staying at the Chengdu Airport Hotel, which I believe is within the airport boundaries. Do I qualify for the 72-hour visa free transit?
