About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I booked my flight back to the US from Beijing

but originally it said it was from Beijing to LAX, or so I thought. Then my flight was changed and now I fly from Beijing to Chengdu to LAX. THEN...my flight was changed again to Beijing to Chengdu for 16 hours then LAX. Originally I had planned to go to Beijing a day or two early to visit the great wall and a couple of other spots but I was under the impression that I'd be able to get the 72 hour visa but now I am not sure that I can get it at all. Does anyone know? By the looks of the picture it seems like I can no longer get the 72 hour free transit in Beijing :(

Two stops in China kills the 72 hours. You're limited to 24 hours direct transit from scheduled arrival in Beijing to scheduled departure from Chengdu. But if you're in Chengdu for 16 hours you can leave the airport and have a look round there.
