New York to Tokyo with Layover in Shanghai

I am a US passport holder traveling from NYC to Tokyo via Shanghai. My layover in Shanghai is overnight and I am hoping to stay in a hotel near the airport.

Do I need a visa to leave the Airport for an overnight hotel stay?
