About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I plan to fly to Shanghai on 1 April arriving at 18.30 hours and depart at 00.15 hours on 5 April.

Am I right in thinking all I need is: -
Passport
Arrival card
Onward ticket

Does the fact I have a one way ticket to Shanghai with one airline then another one way ticket out to Europe make any difference to what is meant by 'in transit'?

I am off to Europe and I then intend to fly back through China arriving in Ghuangzhou on 19 April at 09.25 hours and depart at 13.25 hours on 22 April .

Again am I right in thinking the 72 hour transit policy applies and I need do nothing more than turn up at the airport and present the documentation above to the authorities?

I have read somewhere about registering at the local Police Station: is this necessary?
Is there anything else that I need to do?
Thanks,

If your travel route is country A-Shanghai (144 hours)-Europe-Guangzhou (72 hours)-a different country rather than the last one in Europe, you will qualify for the 144 hour and 72 hour free transit in Shanghai and Guangzhou respectively. You need to register at the local police station if you will stay for more than 24 hours in China.
