About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Transit Visa for Shanghai for British passport holder

We have an executive travelling to Shanghai via HK who holds a British Passport/Green Card.
He arrives in HK on April 4 at 3:25 pm and would like to travel to Shanghai for business on April 5 departing at 9:15 pm. Is it an option for him to get a Transit Visa while in HK and if so, does he apply at the airport?

If he wants to transit without visa (which is NOT a transit G type) he needs to be leaving Shanghai for a 3rd country (not China and not Hong Kong) by a non-stop flight. Or else get a visa in advance.

Thank you - can the flight to the 3rd country be a connection back to HK or does he need to spend the day/night in the 3rd country?

All that matters is that your plane lands in a 3rd country after it leaves China. For example, Hong Kong-Shanghai-Macau is fine.

Than you. Just to confirm, if that same flight referenced ended in HK, that would qualify.

Yes. Chinese immigration doesn't care at all about the bigger picture. They only look at your flight into China and the first destination of your flight out.
