About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Would this qualify for the 144 hour free transit?

My son and his family (American citizens) are planning to come to Shanghai via Kumming from Calcutta, India to meet me (I am flying from Canada), then we will return from Shanghai via Kumming to Calcutta. We wanted to spend a few days in Shanghai. Is it possible to use the 144 hour free transit visa option?

No, you cannot use the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai. All of you need to apply for a tourist L type for that.
