About:China Visa on Arrival

Do I need an invitation letter if I'm going to be staying with a friend, not at a hotel?

It says I'll need proof of a hotel booking, for the normal visa. But I'm not staying at a hotel. How about for the VOA? I'm from Australia, and will be staying with an American friend there.

Yes, you need to provide an invitation letter from your friend if you cannot provide hotel booking record. If you apply for VOA, the hotel reservation may not be needed.
