Cruising from Shanghai

Hi,can anybody help, we are flying to the city in March, staying 2 nights in a hotel then cruising to Japan for 5 nights, then returning to the city where we fly back to the UK same day,I can't see why we can't travel on the 144 hour visa free transit policy but I cant see anything on the visa website about entering the city twice in a week.

I suppose you are UK passport holder. Well, for your first layover in the city, you are quality for the 144h visa-free transit. You may need to apply for a transit permit at the airport upon arriving. For the return trip when going back from Japan, your layover duration may be within 24h, for which no visa is needed either. Let me know if you are still confused.
