About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am staying in Singapore as SOUTH Korean passport holder.

I am planning to visit Korea with my kids for holiday via China. During 144 hrs transit time in Shanghai, China, my family want to travel Shanghai city and do I need to apply visa? Or not, can I go without China visa application? Travel agent in Singapore keep asking me to apply but according to website, no need to. Which one is correct?
