About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

I'm a Thai citizen living in the United States.

I will be flying from Los Angeles to Shanghai and then fly from Shanghai to Bangkok on two different airlines (United + Thai Airways). My layover is less than 24 hours. Do I need a transit visa if I don't leave the airport? Thank you.

Buawan, no, you don’t need it. You can just apply for a free temporary stay permit at Shanghai airport, and then you can leave the airport.

If I'm not planning to leave the airport, do I still need to apply for the temporary stay permit? I'm arriving to PVG about 6pm and flying out the next morning at 6am. I'm just planning to stay in the airport, but I do have to collect and recheck my luggage as I'm on two different airline tickets.
