can i stay in china longer than 3 months at a time?

i am planning to spend 6 -12 months travelling through china and wondering about the best visa option.
with a double or multi-entry permit for 6-12 months, can i stay for longer than 3 months at a time?
or will i have to leave after every 3 months & return again?

Darren, it is possible for you to stay in China longer than 3 months at a time. You can apply for an extension 7 days earlier before duration of stay runs out after your entry.

thanks nicole.
i now realise the standard tourist visa is actually 30 days.
from your answer i assume the same applies, we can apply for an extension before the 30days runs out.
could i apply for that extension in chengdu?
