Our cruise will be 5 days ( 2 days in Korea, Japan and going back to Shanghai. then after that we will be staying for a night in Shanghai. We will be having a trip going to Philippines and going bach after 10 days in the USA. Do I need to get a visa to China or can i get just the 15 days free visa.

Based on what you said, you can probably enjoy the 144 hours free transit in Shanghai each time if you travel lie USA-Shanghai (144 hours()-Korea-Japan-Shanghai (one day)-Philippines-USA, but you’d better double check that with the cruise ship company.
Your husband needs to apply for a visa for Shanghai, and double entries are needed.
