About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72 hour transit Xian, exit via HKG transit to SYD

I have flights booked from HKG to Xian, staying 72 hours, then flying to SYdney via HKG (Transit in HKG airport.
Cathay Dragon Air staff denied boarding without China Visa, despite having printed pages of info on 72 hour free transit with me in English and Chinese.
Are they correct ? Or do they need educating ?

Yes they´re correct as your route was HK - Xi´an - HK.
