Cannot even get into China mainland from Seattle airport last time

I cannot get into China mainland last time when I want to visit Beijing because I though that we can apply visa in Beijing international airport. This time, I book to Shanghai > Hong Kong > Japan > then come back to Seattle and I hope that I can apply free transit in Shanghai. Do you think I can do that?

Sam, if you travel like USA> Shanghai (less than 144 hours)> Hong Kong > Japan >US, you will be able to enjoy the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai.
