The cheapest way from Shanghai to Urumqi

At the end of May I need to get to Urumqi from Shanghai for as cheap as possible (compared to the flight ticket prices). I am on my own and I am a girl. I also happen to have one big suitcase and one small. Is it possible for me to go by train? Thank you!
