About:Visa Policy of China

Hi, I am an Indian passport holder and I will be traveling to Japan from Hong Kong via Shanghai.

Layover in Shanghai is little less than 24 hrs. I wanted to know if I require VISA beforehand to go outside the airport for sightseeing? Is there really any 24 hr direct transit which allows you to go outside airport boundaries?

The links below tell that its possible to go outside airport. But a comment by a person in the 2nd link says he was denied even though he had only 8 hrs layover.

Also, I called up the Embassy office and they said the rule is "you do not require VISA if you stay inside the airport for 24hrs or do not change airport. With this rule its upto you to decide if you require VISA or not". So its confusing what's actually the rule.

Can anyone please suggest what to do and anyone has any faced similar situation?

Thank you.

Dev, if you will travel like HK-Shanghai (24 hours)-Japan, you will be able to use the 24 hour direct transit in Shanghai. You need to apply for a temporary stay permit which is free of charge at the immigration office inside Shanghai airport, and then you can go to the city for a visit.

Thank you for your reply. One thing is I dont find it to be anywhere in the official website. So I am bit apprehensive if I should take VISA. I also have booked a place for accommodation.
