Study on S1 visa?

My husband is accompanying me to Beijing as I undertake an international teaching job there. He will not have the right to work on the S1 but could he undertake some study perhaps? Or, could he potentially change from an S1 to Z if he finds part/full time work in say, a bar or hotel?
