About:China Visa

We are travelling from Australia in January 2017 and staying in Shanghai for two nights.

Then we proceed on the cruise to Japan, Taiwan, etc. Do we need a visa ?

You don’t need it. You can enjoy the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai.
