About:China Visa Exemption

I am a US. Citizen and I will take a Chinese flight from San Francisco to Phuket, Thailand ,

but I will transit in Guangzhou( Guangdong province) airport and stay there for around 18 hours before I take a flight to Thailand, am I qualified for 72 visa free transit ? Thanks
