About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I fly to Guandong on NZL passport from Auckland, then intend to cross to Hong Kong.

In this case HK should be the third country, even if I cross only by bus or metro. Then I will be returning to Auckland from Guandong, the same Airport. What about if I don't make it to go to HK and only stay in Guangdong? Would be there something illegal? Thanks, Stefan

Stefan, if you travel like New Zealand-Guangzhou-HK-Guangzhou-New Zealand, you can enjoy free transit in Guangzhou in both directions.
If you fly to Guangzhou from NZ, and then fly back to NZ, you cannot enjoy the free transit because it’s not a transit at all. You need to apply for a visa in advance.
