About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Will 72 hours free transit apply for HONG KONG-GUANGZHOU-HONG KONG?

We plan to take a side trip to from Hong Kong to Guangzhou for 2 night/3 day, on our own (not with any organized tour), the trip is by train or coach, not by air.
Do we need a visa?
