Mike, firstly, prepare the required documents such as your passport and its copy, a completed application form, a bareheaded color photo taken recently, round trip air tickets, accommodation arrangement, and your work permit in Australia.
Secondly, go to the CVASC to submit the application to apply for tourist L type.

When you say a copy, are you saying I need a photocopy of my passport?

Thanks for the help. I just found out about the 72 hour free transit. I am flying into Beijing and staying for only 60 hours. I will be going to a Great Wall portion that is about 3 plus hours from Beijing. Would I be able to do this 72 hour free transit?

Mike, if you fly from Australia to Beijing and then to another country or region, you will be able to do this on 72h free transit permit.
