About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Travelling from UK to China, then onto Nepal. Can i get 144hrs

SO, my understanding is it's 144hours from midnight the day after you arrive.
In my case, I arrive January 4th 2017, so a 144hr free transit policy will be valid from January 5th 00:00 until 11:59pm on January 10th 2017. My flight is very early on January 11th. My question is can I use the 144 free visa policy if I arrive at Hongqiao airport in Shanghai at 10pm on 10th January, pass through passport control as I will presumably then be deemed to be an international tourist as opposed to visiting China.
It's worth mentioning I then travel to Kunming for a 1hr stop off, and fly onto Kathmandu on 11th.
Any advice with this would be really useful!

You can't use the 144-hour TWOV since your flight has a stop in mainland China. Only the 24-hour TWOV applies in your case.

Thanks buddy. So if I am travelling to Shanghai for just 4 days but also have to stop at another airport for a layover on the way out of China it goes against the free transit policy?
I ask as I can change my flight so its within the 6 day period. Its cheaper than a Visa

That is correct, since you won't be clearing immigration in Shanghai that way.
