Travelling to Beijing without passport

Hi,
I am Dr. Asif, currently working at south university of sciences and technology. I entered in mainland china using Z visa on 13 Nov and currently in process of applying for residence permit. After I submit my passport for permit, I need to go to beijing for some work. Please guide me if i can travel to beijing without passport or not.
