Do I need a letter of invitation?

My daughter and I will be visiting China for 11 days to visit my son who is undertaking a cultural exchange programme for 6 months. We will be staying where he is in Beijing for some of the time and in a hotel for the rest. Do we need a letter of invitation? If so, who would it come from?

Leanne, the invitation letter is not necessary if you can provide round trip air tickets and hotel reservation.
