About:History of Silk Road

Why were the silk roads built in the first place?

We know that they were used to carry goods around, and used for various other purposes.
But what was their primary intention in building it in the first place?

Before the route was formally established during the Western Han Dynasty (202BC - 9AD), there were groups of merchants making small-scale trading between central area and western regions along the route. So the primary intention was still for trading.
