About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

round trip to Shanghai involving various countries

Say my itinerary is Ottawa-Dulles-Narita-PVG on the way (United to Narita, then NRT to PVG with ANA) in and flying back to Ottawa via a US airport (SFO, ORD, IAD, etc..) then to Ottawa (say with United/Air Canada) or via a Canadian airport (YVR, YYZ, YUL). Would I be eligible for the 72 hours visa? Or would I actually have to prove I spend at least a day in Japan?

You don't need to have any proof of stay in Japan as long as your last embarkation point before China is in a different country than your first destination outside China.

Luc, so you will travel like Canada-US-Japan-Shanghai-US-Canada? If yes and your layover time in Shanghai is less than 144 hours, you can enjoy the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai. Your air ticket to Japan is enough to prove that you will stop in Japan.
