About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

US citizen with less than 72 hour R/T

Flying from Detroit to Beijing, Beijing to Pudong and vice versa round-trip. About 72 hours stay. Can I use the 72 hour visa? Or do I need to apply for L visa?

L visa is required since you will be visiting two different cities.

(To admins: I meant "visa" when I said it, not "entry permit". Chinese embassies abroad only issue entry permits to Chinese nationals.)
