About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

If I fly from San Francisco to Shanghai with a layover in Beijing,

with a ticket to go to tokyo afterwards, do I qualify? It's a three hours layover so I won't even exit the airport

To clarify the layover in Beijing is three hours, I will be in Shanghai for four days

No, since you will be clearing Chinese immigration in Beijing and not Shanghai. In order to be eligible, you need to arrive at Shanghai directly from SFO.

K, no, you don’t qualify. You should transit in either Shanghai or Beijing if you want to enjoy the free transit.
