American citizen with flight layover in Beijing from Sapporo to Los Angeles

I am an American citizen who will be traveling on March 4 2017 from Sapporo (CTS) airport thru Beijing (PEK) to Los Angeles (LAX). My layover in Beijing is 18hours. Will I need some type of visa to exit the airport and explore Beijing? Thank you for your time!

Rich, no, you don’t need entry permit to leave the airport because you are eligible for the 24 hour direct transit in Beijing. You just need to apply for a free temporary stay permit at the immigration office inside Beijing airport, and then you can exit airport.
