About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am traveling from thailand to shanghai then Los Angeles.

I understand my path will work, but do I need to request the visa prior to travel or is it all handled at the airport in shanghai? Also when notifying the airline, can I do that at the airport or do I need to do it before?

Kimberlee, you should apply for the 144 hour free transit after arriving at Shanghai airport, but you need to inform the airlines that you want to use the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai when you board the plane in Thailand.
